If you were out and about in Houston on Wednesday, you may have gotten a sense of why so many Texans feel that marijuana legalization is inevitable, even in the nation’s largest “prohibition” state.
“You have to keep the word ‘inevitable’ in your brain all the time,” said Richelle Gemini, a poet, rapper, and comedian. She explained this Monday as she prepared to emcee a 420 Flower Hour at Railway Heights Market — one of a number of such events scheduled around the city for the unofficial holiday of 4/20, or “Weed Day,” this year.
Austin Zamhariri, the executive director of the nonprofit Texas Cannabis Collective, a nonprofit focused on grassroots advocacy, hopes that’s right. President Joe Biden, also a Democrat, has been a bit evasive on the subject, to the exasperation of advocates.
