With a stellar cast and a twisty script, this delightfully nasty Irish comedy was one of the year’s greatest TV treats.
There are also a few less familiar figures: Eva Birthistle as one sister struggling with guilt after betraying her husband and children by having an affair, and Sarah Greene as another sister whose hilariously brusque manner hides a more vulnerable side—and whose eyepatch augurs a darker backstory, inevitably involving JP.It may sound obvious, but it really is just very, very funny.
It isn’t all bloodthirsty high jinks and vicious one-liners, however—the show has a more resonant subtext too, even if woven in subtly. Anne Marie-Duff’s put-upon-wife Grace is, fundamentally, a victim of abuse, and the frustration of her sisters as they try to protect her from the worst of JP’s behaviors within a patriarchal society is strangely affecting.
