Cleveland Browns wide receiver Amari Cooper has been great at something useful this season that he doesn't consider a skill.
- that’s helping the Browns offenseCleveland Browns wide receiver Amari Cooper has been great at drawing DPI calls this season -- but he doesn't consider it a skill. He’s good at most things an NFL wide receiver should be good at, and has the Pro Bowler resume to prove it.
“Instead of it being a skill to draw DPI, it’s more of a greater skill to not allow the guys to touch you so much to where it draws a DPI,” Cooper said “You get what I’m saying?” He drew two on the same drive against the Tennessee Titans -- one for corner Sean Murphy-Bunting and the other for corner Kristian Fulton -- and it helped lead to a 19-yard touchdown from Deshaun Watson to Jerome Ford in the first quarter. The drive gave Cleveland a 10-3 lead in their 27-3 win.
But it’s undeniable that when you have someone as big and physical as Cooper, as well as coaches who emphasize playing through contact, sometimes the calls just come. “He’s good at deception,” Grant Delpit said. “He deceives very well in his routes and is very quick, like quick movements. From head movements to get a DB off-guard, off-balance. So now he’s just going to run into him or draw fouls. That’s what comes with his routes. A lot of people can’t guard that.”
“Some crews call offensive holding more than others,” Cooper said. “Some crews call DPI more than others. This is something like you kind of put in a database, like OK this crew, they’re known for calling more holding than average. Stuff like that. So yeah, I definitely, I didn’t always look at that, but once they start presenting that information, I started paying more attention to it because it does matter.
