Historian Chris Smith, author of “The Hidden History of Bletchley Park,” said it is impossible to prove the extent to which the work at Bletchley Park shortened the war, but it undoubtedly sped up the development of computing. “The way to imagine Bletchley Park is a massive civil service bureaucracy,” Smith said. “It’s basically a factory. … Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. It’s always going.”
