Kelly Roebuck: The truth about “responsibly farmed” salmon
In grocery stores throughout Canada, shoppers are being hoodwinked by sustainability eco-labels on farmed salmon raised in open-net pens. And wild salmon are paying the price.
The Marine Stewardship Council, the world’s largest and most prominent seafood eco-certification, was born in the wake of that collapse. Today, numerous “sustainable” eco-certifications appear on all types of seafood in fresh counters and restaurant menus throughout the country — including Aquaculture Stewardship Council and Best Aquaculture Practices labels on farmed salmon.
In 2016, Mowi Canada West’s Marsh Bay was the first North American salmon farm to be awarded the Aquaculture Stewardship Council’s “responsibly farmed” label. During the audit, it peaked at 23 sea lice per farmed fish — numbers that could have devastating impacts on young migrating salmon. How is this “responsibly farmed”? This wasn’t an isolated incident. In 2018, Cermaq Canada’s Clayoquot ASC-certified farms reported lice loads as high as 34 per fish.
found nearly all major grocers rely on ASC and/or BAP certification to sell open-net pen farmed salmon under their “sustainable seafood” commitments.This finding suggests that eco-certifications for farmed salmon are encouraging shoppers to buy fish that are harmful to wild salmon, raising the question of whether they are fit for purpose.
