“I believe the fall will be a period of aggressive constitutional defense by Congress against the president,” RepRaskin said. “I believe this will be a time when we broaden our investigation outwards from the contents of the Mueller report”
At 10 a.m. on Thursday morning, Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee voted on a resolution to formalize their investigation into President, as an “impeachment investigation.” For months Democratic leadership had been moving at a snail-like pace, frustrating progressives who have pushed for a more aggressive timetable. Now, these Democrats hope, the move toward impeachment can begin in earnest—before they lose their window of opportunity before the 2020 election.
The vote was symbolic, reflecting similar steps the Judiciary Committee took during previous impeachment proceedings in the House. It was perhaps most analogous toDemocratic congressman Peter Rodino led as chairman of the committee in October 1973 to investigate any allegations of “impeachable offenses” by Richard Nixon. But it was also intended to cement the formality of the probe.
Yet House leadership still appears hesitant to telegraph that the Judiciary Committee is, in Nadler’s words, conducting an “impeachment investigation,” even though House Speakerhas supported the panel’s every move. Pelosi, as always, has left all options open, and the rest of the leadership has followed her lead, likely seeking to leave space for Democrats facing tough elections next fall in districts where impeachment is perhaps less politically palatable.
Allegations of presidential self-dealing have been in the spotlight over the past several weeks following Trump’s suggestion that next year’s G7 summit be held at his Doral resort in Miami; Vice President’s eyebrow-raising stay at the Trump International Golf Links & Hotel in Doonbeg, Ireland; and reports that the U.S. Air Force might be propping up Trump’s Turnberry property in Scotland.
