DALLAS — For a week, the Spurs sat on the longest skid in club history as the NBA enjoyed its All-Star hiatus.
Dallas buried the Spurs from 3-point range, making 22 of 42 attempts, and pulled away with a 43-26 fourth quarter. The Spurs allowed 40 points in the second quarter, losing ground despite scoring 37 themselves. Dallas entered intermission with a 74-63 lead.Doncic missed a triple-double by three rebounds, mainly because he didn’t play in the fourth quarter.One bright spot for the Spurs this season has been the play of their bench, which entering Thursday led the NBA at 43.1 points per game.
Dallas had three bench players score in double figures, led by Tim Hardway Jr.’s 22 points and six 3-pointers. After the game, Popovich praised rookie guards Branham and Wesley for playing what he called their best game of the season.Branham was not expecting to be a point guard after the Spurs selected him 20th overall. But he has played mostly on the ball first as a reserve when Wesley was out earlier in the season, and now as a starter with Jones sidelined.
