On Saturday at Audi Field, the two sides have a chance to begin fresh. But to enjoy any success this year, TFC needs to remain healthy, tighten up defensively and, according to head coach Bob Bradley, find ways to put the team’s star wingers – the Italian duo of Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi – in good spots to succeed. Insigne and Bernardeschi arrived in Toronto last season and instantly demonstrated that they can be dynamite in MLS.
The Reds need a forward to fully complement the Italians, which was a problem in 2022. Last year, the club’s No.1 striker, Jesus Jimenez, went into a bewildering slump after Insigne and Bernardeschi arrived. TFC traded Jimenez to FC Dallas last week for 23-year-old midfielder Brandon Servania. In the off-season, the Reds signed Norwegian forward Adama Diomande, who scored 24 goals in 50 appearances for LAFC in 2018 and 2019.
TFC midfielder Mark-Anthony Kaye is excited about what the Italian wingers might be able to accomplish over a full season. “We have a bit of an idea of DC and their overall style of play,” said Bradley. “We got a chance to watch them in Palm Desert a little bit so we use those things and have our guys ready.”
