As Dumbledore told Harry at the end of Order of the Phoenix, if Sirius had treated Kreacher more kindly, he might not have died. The last surviving member of the Black family had never "saw Kreacher as a being with feelings as acute as a human's," and therefore never thought that mistreating the house-elf could lead him to betrayal. This came down to Sirius' family values.
