T.J. is a bright and meticulous fifth grader at Almira Elementary, but sometimes he struggles to focus. His teachers at Almira Elementary and his family help him be his best.

As I make my way toward him, T.J. asks if I can help him with a crossword puzzle. The kids are learning about maps and geography. He tells me he is sitting at the back table to help him focus. Though T.J. has his moments of disruption, there are other times when he exudes top-tier focus. One time, he and his classmates worked on a math test on their iPads, and his eyes were glued to the screen. Upon finishing the test, he simply said “I’m done,” took off his headphones and gave Mr. Whelan a high-five.
That same November day, T.J. and his classmates head to art class. The students are continuing their optical illusion project. T.J. wasn’t at school when his classmates started the assignment, so he has to catch up. As T.J. waits to receive instructions from Mrs. Ronika Robinson, Almira’s art teacher, he tells me he doesn’t like his medicine because he doesn’t know what to do while he’s on it. I ask him if the medicine makes him feel stuck, and he says it does.
