People waited in their cars parked in long lines on April 9, 2020, at Traders Village for the San Antonio Food Bank to begin a food distribution. The need for emergency food aid exploded as the COVID-19 virus was starting to spread. Nearly 265,000 San Antonio residents of all ages were living below the poverty level in 2020, new census numbers show.
The city’s annual median household income was $53,420 in 2020, according to the 2016-2020 American Community Survey Five-Year Estimates. San Antonio’s lower pay scale is a trend that extends back more than a decade. In 2010, the Alamo City had a lower median household income than the nation, Texas as a whole, Austin, Fort Worth and Corpus Christi. Only Houston, Dallas and El Paso reported lower income figures than San Antonio at that time, census data revealed.
“The Hispanic population tends to be at the lower end of the educational attainment spectrum compared to other race and ethnic groups. So given the fact that a very significant portion of our population is Latino — and income and education are very strongly associated with each other — that’s been kind of a factor.”
The latest census numbers show only 17 percent of San Antonio’s Hispanic or Latino residents have received a bachelor’s degree or more advanced degrees, while 43 percent of the city’s white residents and 25 percent of Blacks have completed such levels of higher education.Potter said San Antonio has made some steps forward. The city’s level of educational attainment, including for Latinos, has improved, he said, while UTSA was recently designated a Tier One research institution.
“That can be attributed to systemic barriers,” Wong said. “So just looking at this aggregated data can help us kind of better understand why San Antonio may have a lower median income.”
