The Starling Girl stars Sharp Objects breakout actress Eliza Scanlen as a 17-year-old struggling to define her place within her fundamentalist Christian community. It’s uncomfortable and unnerving yet revealing in the way it centers a woman’s truth when everything is stacked against her freedom. Writer-director Laurel Parmet draws from her own personal journey with guilt with respect to relationships with men, appropriately exploring themes of abuse, self-discovery, and empowerment.
