This month, I thought I would be a little bit negative and discuss a problem issue, indeed not just to astronomers, but for much of the population in general. The issue is light pollution. This is both excessive and misdirected light.
It usually refers to the outdoor environment but does also have indoor consequences. It interferes with us as urban residents just watching the night sky and also interferes with astronomical observatories. It also disrupts ecosystems and is known to have adverse health effects.Light pollution includes outdoor lighting from a building exterior, advertising, outdoor area lighting .
How many of us can see the Milky Way at all anymore. I can’t. Our ancestors could. Astronomical photography, and even just viewing is much more difficult.
