Six Texas senators voted to toss out articles of impeachment against Attorney General Ken Paxton. Their partisan actions harm the search for the truth.
Why is anyone’s guess. The senators are appropriately under a gag order as jurors in the case. In our view, their decision falls on the spectrum between cowardice and cynicism. They either fear the very partisans who supported them in their primaries, or they are so cynical about our democracy that they place their own party and personal interests above those of the state and the people they should serve.History tells us that ethics has long been negotiated through partisanship.
Thankfully, a strong majority of the Senate, including serious Republicans, decided that the people deserve to hear the evidence the House investigating committee gathered and to hearwho were forced to leave their careers in the attorney general’s office based on Paxton’s actions. And they decided, too, that the public should hear Paxton’s defense, to listen to his lawyers question that evidence and question those witnesses in an open forum.That is the way democracy is supposed to work. That is the way the rule of law is supposed to work.To try to smother this trial before it even opened was a deep shame, and those who voted to do so should carry that shame with them through the years to come.
