Beads, pearls and seashells – the latest jewellery trend? DIY.
Back in 2022, it’s leather straps, glass beads, seashells, felt and macrame – you name it – that are making a stealth return. Essentially, all the things you’d associate with your year 6 art teacher. And, of course, it wouldn’t be a Y2K trend revival if it didn’t originate in the Gen-Z trend petri dish that is TikTok. Kickstarted by a flock of devoted DIY-ers during lockdown, who took to strings and pearls to kill some time, the crave for craft has also taken a hold of tastemakers.
Hailey Bieber’s beach attire is a perfect example: think bucket hats, body chains and a lime green glass bead necklace with a matching heart-shaped pendant. Influencer and stylist, Marc Forne, meanwhile, opted for a rope-style necklace with a colour-matched glass bead by Spanish brand Gigamguas.“It taps into the wider fashion trend for a more retro, homespun look. Instead of crochet and embroidery, think beads and rough-cut gems.
