It was roughly 10:20 a.m. when Brott was hit in the Durand neighbourhood, about one block from the office of the Brott Music Festival — the conductor’s namesake event, the largest classical music festival in Canada, which has been operating since 1987.
On Wednesday, police in Hamilton refused to provide the driver’s name, but said the driver was due to appear in court to face charges for failing to stop in an accident causing death and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death. “I was exposed before I was born,” Brott told the Globe and Mail in 2002. The family lived in a single bedroom, in his grandmother’s apartment in Montreal, before moving to a duplex. Humble beginnings aside, the music began early. His musical instruction, according to the book Maestros in America: Conductors in the 21st Century, began at age three, with violin lessons with Alexander; at five, he debuted as a soloist at a children’s matinée.
“I spent recess in the corner with a book,” Brott told students in 2011, according to the Hamilton Spectator. “I always felt a little different. I didn’t feel appreciated.” The decades following had Brott ushered around the world, baton in hand. At 19, he was hired as an assistant to Walter Susskind, conductor of the Toronto Symphony; three years later, he became the music director for the Royal Ballet in London.Article content
In the early days of his career, Brott’s adventurous conducting was too much for some; the Globe and Mail noted that his plans, in the early 1960s, to take an orchestra down into a quarry to play for British miners, had been described as “undignified antics.OTTAWA, ONT.MAY 4th, 2009- Boris Brott conducting the Children’s Concert for Music on the front steps of Parliament Building in Ottawa.
