Thinking about trading London for the countryside? Our digital editor has done just that. Here's what it's really like:
With the exception of people whose careers really are tied to London e.g. baristas, politicians and some media nearly everyone planned to exit London in the next 5-10 years. I began to call it the exit strategy and took great pleasure in discovering various strategies from our friends and colleagues.
Then it hit. The five-year itch. Spend enough sweaty summers in London and you can’t help but build up a tally of all the compromises you make to be there. A tiny flat in a less than ideal area, a disgusting commute, a furiously fast pace of life – the list goes on. We also, quite accidentally, started having regular weekends away. Every few weeks we’d either escape to Bristol to see my family or book ourselves into a staycation in the Cotswolds.
I’ve been afraid to announce this decision, for fear of being labelled a bad feminist. I was worried it wasn’t cool to prioritise family anymore, rather to rejoice in the juggle.
