Smithson Valley’s girls, Taft’s girls and LEE’s boys, who have not lost a match heading into this weekend’s regional tournaments, each returned a wealth of veteran leadership into the season, and they believe it’s translated into their results.

Smithson Valley faces McAllen Memorial in a Region IV-5A semifinal at 1 p.m. Friday at Brownsville Sports Park. Although Smithson Valley is now in 5A, the Rangers have been one of the area’s top teams regardless of classification. The Rangers went 40-3-3 over the previous two seasons in Class 6A. The Rangers last advanced to the regional semifinals in 2000 when the playoff bracket had fewer rounds. Smithson Valley has never been four rounds deep in the postseason.
The Raiders return nine starters and two other regulars from the 2022 squad that went 16-5-4 and lost against O’Connor in the third round.
