When Mary’s husband, King George V, ascended to the throne in 1910, he was the third monarch to be crowned as the Emperor of India. Like his father and grandmother, Queen Victoria, he threw a coronation ceremony there. Due to the risk of travel and a British law demanding that the crown jewels remain in England, a new set of regalia was created. Queen Mary’s jewels were made as a set that could be separated to make them more versatile.
The queen has also made a few jokes about the brooch in the years she has worn it. At a 2002 event in the visitors room of the Queen’s Gallery, she approached a 10-year-old boy who was studying a book about the royal collection, pointed to a page that featured the Cullinan diamonds III and IV, and she pointed to the brooch on her shoulder.

But the mine where the Cullinan diamond was found wasn’t operated by Rhodes’s company, and was in fact given to her family by a government that Rhodes attacked during his reign. In that case, she might even be casting her lot with protesters, though the rest of us will never know for sure.
