.kady: The pros and cons of putting political staff in the hot seat at committee via ipoliticsca

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau testifies to the House Finance committee on July 31, 2020, about WE Charity’s involvement in a student-grant program.

As of Tuesday morning, it hadn’t happened yet, but at some point over the next few days — possibly as early as this afternoon, but more likely later this week — members of the Standing Committee on Procedure and House Affairs will vote on whether to expand the witness list for their ongoing probe into allegations the Chinese government interfered in the last two federal elections to include Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s chief of staff, Katie Telford.

Barring a last-minute realignment of the cross-table dynamics, the motion is all but guaranteed to pass. Ultimately, it will come down to the New Democrats, who, despite having only one seat at the table, hold the balance of power in any scenario that pits the governing party caucus against the combined will of the Conservatives and the Bloc Québécois.

Of course, that is precisely why the five Liberals on the committee have been taking turns talking out the clock during the last few meetings — as long as the debate is still going, the chair won’t call the question for the vote.
