The Academy has responded to David Oyelowo and Ava DuVernay's claim.
With #OscarsSoWhite dominating social media and the news that Spike Lee, Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith, and Mark Ruffalo will boycott the Academy Awards—which failed to nominate a single minority actor or actress in its top four categories—Hollywood's diversity problem is hot news. But the racial inequality is much worse than what surfaces at awards shows: A new study released today calls the situation an "epidemic of invisibility," with shocking numbers to support that claim.
3 percent of all speaking actors who performed in film, television, or online in the 2014 to 2015 season were from a minority—as defined by race and ethnicity. That number falls short of our national population, which is about 37.9 percent minorities. "This is no mere diversity problem. This is an inclusion crisis," lead researcher Stacy L. Smith wrote in a press release.
