The letter continues, noting that the error was realized on Oscar night, but that the Academy “did not want another ‘Year of the Moonlight,’” a reference to the 2017 mix-up that briefly named La La Land and not Moonlight as best picture. Lest Polley grow suspicious that the oddly formatted letter was perhaps an April Fool’s prank from one of her children, it points out in italics that, while she may have received the news on April 1, “this is not a joke. This is much too cruel to be a joke, ergo we deeply apologize for any inconvenience we may has caused you.”
Polley shared the crushing news on Twitter, noting: “My eleven-year-old swung low for April Fools Day this year. #AprilFoolsDay”
