One Revenge of the Sith extra shows that Lucas originally had a far more grandiose and gory plan for Obi-Wan and Grievous’ chase on Utapau.
The 4-hour director’s cut of Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith is somewhat of a legend within the Star Wars community. George Lucas had almost two hours of extra content planned for the film. Some of it had already been shot and edited before being cut, while other sections only existed as rough animatics for proof of concept. One such sequence was Obi-Wan’s chase of Grievous on Utapau, which only lasts for around a minute in the film.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The deleted chase between Obi-Wan and Grievous occupied a solid 6 minutes of Revenge of the Sith’s 4-hour cut. Not only was it six times longer than the short chase in the film, but it was also wildly different. At one point, both of them enter a tunnel where Grievous drives his bike straight through an oncoming train. Meanwhile, Obi-Wan follows him by hanging from the tunnel ceiling on his varactyl.
There are several obvious reasons why Lucas’ planned chase had to be cut down for the final film. For one thing, seeing Obi-Wan disembowel Grievous could easily have pushed the film to an R rating. But another reason is it simply doesn’t line up with Obi-Wan’s Jedi characteristics. Grievous is helpless after Obi-Wan chops his arms off. If Obi-Wan killed him while he was defenseless, he would have been no better than Anakin when he killed Dooku.
Lucas’ Vision Wasn’t Realistic For The Original Chase In addition to the animatic being too gory for the original film, the unique and creative camera angles during the chase may have been too flashy for the CGI at the time to pull off. Undoubtedly, Lucas had an epic sequence with a lot of twists and turns planned out. But the extra six minutes of chase didn’t add much to the overall story of the prequels.
