The de Young Museum is slated to host the portraits starting in June.

Former President Barack Obama, right, and former first lady Michelle Obama appear at the Obama Foundation Summit in Chicago on Oct. 31, 2017.Since mid-June of 2021, the official portraits of former president Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama have been touring the country, with stops at the Art Institute of Chicago, Brooklyn Museum of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, where they reside until March 20.

The tour was originally planned to conclude in May at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, but it has just been extended to include two more cities — San Francisco and Boston. The pair of paintings by artists Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald broke barriers by being the first presidential portraits by Black artists commissioned by the Smithsonian. Thomas Campbell, director of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, described the style and significance of Wiley and Sherald's work to the, by saying that the pair of artists “work within the genre of Western portraiture painting, while actively expanding, and critiquing, artistic conventions that have traditionally defined representations of power. We are thrilled that Bay Area audiences will have the opportunity to experience these powerful, iconic paintings in person.
