Sustainability—it’s not just a climate issue, it’s a human rights issue too.
The idea around the campaign is to encourage followers to replace shopping the latest trends or buying from fast fashion brands with something smarter, whether that means stopping consumption of clothing entirely, using a swap or rental platform, upcycling, or buying vintage and consignment. Remake is asking participants to adhere to the challenge for the next 90 days. “We really think of this as a fashion diet,” Barenblat says.
As Barenblat points out, the Pay Up and No New Clothes campaigns are designed to “send a message to those big brands to say that if you’re not going to pay for wages for orders dating all the way back to March, then we can’t in good conscience be spending our money with you.” She adds, “it’s a signal to the industry as a whole too that if you’re not going to do right by our planet and the people, that’s just not the future of fashion.
"The same fashion brands who exploit black and brown garment makers that bring their labels to life have been quick to post how much they care about social justice on social media. Many in our community take the #nonewclothes pledge because brands have merely paid paid lip service rather than center their sustainability around justice and wellbeing. I personally pledge to buy #nonewclothes until fashion brands #PayUp for all canceled and in-production orders.
