To be clear, real justice would be Wells still being here with us today.

Although this decision is disappointing and saddening, it is not surprising to anyone in the Black community who’s been paying attention to how our lives are consistently devalued in cases like this.

From the very moment we learned of Wells’ unusual disappearance, and then his subsequent death, it felt as if the whole case would be, confronting those who ignore our country’s sordid history of racism and asking us “not to rush to conclusions. ” From week to week, the stories we heard from Wells’ friends and law enforcement — about his missing phone and why they left him behind — continued to evolve.

As the weeks passed and we smelled more rot in the air, it became more evident that we would, once again, not get justice for Wells and his family. Not yet, at least.conducted — which revealed two bruises to the back of his head and no water in his lungs, although originally they assumed he drowned, prompting civil rights attorney Ben Crump to make this a national case.

Despite all of the attempts from people on social media, as well as communities fighting to see something done in this case, it ultimately has ended with no one held accountable for Wells’ death.

“Last night was a reminder that our son’s life does not matter to those who hold positions that are supposed to serve and protect the public,” she said, struggling through tears. “Nolan is loved. He is cherished. He is honored.

And he did not deserve to have his life taken away so suddenly. ”. It was released late on a weekend night, perhaps to thwart as much media coverage as possible since tensions were already running high. I felt numb in that moment, but it also felt like a call to action for so many of us who hadn’t spoken out about how Black deaths are simply not taken seriously.

That not-guilty verdict over a decade ago still speaks to the vulnerability of Black children in this country and how justice has never been promised to us as it is for white Americans. As Black Americans, every “not guilty” or “lack of evidence” rips open the wounds of our past before they’ve even gotten a chance to scar.

Take the case of Tamla Horsford — thein a group of white friends at a sleepover who was found dead in the backyard. The fact that authorities declaredTo be clear, justice would be Nolan Xavier Wells still being here with us, continuing to play football, dance with his friends, and pursue his academic interests. Justice would be Wells being present at family functions and living the normal life of a teenager.

Tragically, instead, he became another victim of the broken system that has continued to fail us. The ongoing conversations about Black people in predominantly white spaces has once again been brought to the forefront, with many people vocalizing that a reversal of the circumstances would never have played out this way. Law enforcement would not rest if a white teen, out with his Black friends, met the fate Wells did.

Still, it is on us to ensure that history doesn’t continue repeating itself. As we continue to grieve Wells, we know that, in these circumstances, despite history telling us what the outcome will be, we must never stop fighting to bring truth to power. We may not be able to bring back Nolan Wells, but we will make sure his story lives on forever and that he is never forgotten.
