A major player in the possible rule change is the Cowboys’ special teams coordinator John Fassel.
Dallas Cowboys wide receiver KaVontae Turpin makes a big kick return in the first quarter against the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Nov. 5, 2023. Philadelphia Eagles place kicker Jake Elliott missed the tackle.special teams coordinator, who has spearheaded the NFL’s consideration to adopt a new-look kickoff that could trickle down to the college and prep levels, believes the league is on the cusp of change.
At least nine members of the return team must align in a 5-yard area, called the setup zone, between their own 25- and 30-yard line. A maximum of two returners can stand in the landing zone.“This is what it is,” Fassel said. “In the NFL right now, you kick it off, and everybody runs. But if you say, right when the ball is caught, ‘Boom, pause it,’ where is everybody on kickoff and kickoff return? What we’re saying is that’s where we are starting the play.
That says more about how few kickoffs were returned in 2023 — just 22% of kicks, Fassel said — than the new kickoff. He said that the league has predicted its injury rate to resemble a designed run play on offense.
