The need for need-finding in medical education
The importance of innovation is often emphasized to medical students early in their training. From precision medicine revolutionizing clinical diagnosis and treatment to public health measures and quality-improvement interventions, medical students are asked to innovate from the cellular to population levels.
Despite the common understanding of the immense importance of innovation in medicine, most medical schools put relatively little effort into specifically training their students as innovators. Even less likely is an education in human-centered design principles that highlight identified needs before developing solutions. Every medical student needs a fundamental understanding of need-finding to train a generation of physicians who can serve as robust collaborators and leaders in innovation.
