Acclaimed indie rockers to kick off latest tour with Nov. 10 show at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium

While it might not come as a complete shock, given their forlorn, dad-rock bona-fides, but being in the National–and all its associated responsibilities and hang-ups–has not always been the easiest job, despite the band’s seemingly never-ending ascendancy.

“ Aaron keeps making this joke on the road, which is basically like, ‘Breaking News: band finally learns to have fun after 24 years,’” said National bassist Scott Devendorf; “We know he’s joking, but I think the heart of that statement is true. Like, we are finally realizing that things are actually fine.”

This year they put out not one, but two stirring albums, “First Two Pages of Frankenstein” and “Laugh Track,” which came out as a surprise release in September. The National have never had a higher profile—they’re practically besties with Swift—but the band still evince an approachable, bedraggled charm.

SF supervisors force popular SFPD foot patrols Legislation approved Tuesday requires the department to develop and implement a community policing strategy “We all grew up in Ohio, so we were kind of instilled this humility from the start,” said Devendorf. “Which was great because it kept us grounded. And we also toured for so long with our friends, doing kind of little band stuff, where we did everything ourselves. All that has helped us for sure.”

After a career making brooding, thoughtful indie rock, the band hasn’t suddenly embraced cheery pop music because they’re in a better place emotionally. Both the “First Two Pages of Frankenstein” and “Laugh Track” are filled with intense treatises on responsibility, doubt, lovesickness and tortured memories, familiar topics for Berninger.
