David Van Dame, nicknamed 'The Farmer,' died in October after a nearly 50-year career skiing at Alta.On November 24, legendary skier David Van Dame took his last chairlift ride up Alta.
Over his nearly 50 years skiing at Alta, Van Dame was given the moniker ‘Farmer Dave,’ since he would ‘farm’ S-shaped tracks in the snow when he skied down runs. He became such an icon to the ski community that Alta Ski Area even produced a documentary on him in February. Van Dame first discovered his passion for skiing back in Delaware, where he met his wife, Kathy. The two moved to Utah the day after they were married in September 1973, after he’d learned Alta was the place to be for skiing powder.
“I really liked traveling with him the best because that way we spent our time together and explored together,” Kathy said. “When we were traveling, we were really in each other’s company. And that was my favorite thing.”
