The Fox X-Men movies set an annoying trend that played against some of the franchise’s most interesting mutants, something the MCU’s X-Men must fix.
Marvel’s upcoming X-Men reboot, be it a movie or a TV show, has the opportunity to break an annoying Fox X-Men franchise trend. So far, the MCU’s X-Men introduction has been limited to Patrick Stewart’s Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and the mentions of “mutation” and “mutant” during Ms. Marvel and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, respectively. Apart from the X-Men ’97 revival and Deadpool 3, an X-Men-related Marvel Studios project has yet to be announced.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Rebooting the X-Men universe for the MCU will not be an easy task. Unlike the Fantastic Four, which never really succeed on the big screen, the X-Men led their own cinematic franchise for more than two decades. Still, there is plenty of room for Marvel to set its X-Men reboot apart from the previous film, especially if the MCU fixes mistakes from the Fox franchise.
The X-Men prequel timeline made some similar mistakes, especially going from X-Men: First Class to X-Men: Days of Future Past. Most of Charles Xavier’s first class of X-Men did not return in a major capacity for Days of Future Past, a sequel that also didn't see the returns of Hellfire Club characters like Emma Frost. Other examples are Angel and Psylocke, who were introduced in X-Men: Apocalypse but did not appear in X-Men: Dark Phoenix.
The MCU’s Character History Is Good News For The X-Men The MCU’s high level of interconnectivity, something that has defined the franchise since Nick Fury appeared in Iron Man’s post-credits scene, is great news for the X-Men. It is rare for Marvel to simply drop a character forever, even when recastings are involved. From major characters like the original Avengers to villains who seemed one-off antagonists for the heroes to face, the MCU is always looking to revisit established names.
Another example is The Incredible Hulk’s Samuel Sterns, who returns to the MCU in Captain America: New World Order now as The Leader. Such an approach to the ever-expanding Marvel Universe helps keep the MCU as an interconnected franchise in which every entry is important, which is exactly what Marvel’s X-Men reboot needs. There are dozens of X-Men characters – hundreds considering non-X-Men mutants – that the MCU will be able to incorporate going forward.
