At the start of season four, Midge is in this precarious spot where she wants to completely revamp her approach to comedy, but she’s also dead set on recreating the Upper West Side existence she had before. What was it like writing this dichotomy she’s experiencing?Well, Midge to us was always going to be a woman pulled in two directions for the rest of her life. She discovered this blinding ambition that takes over, and she can’t control it.
In the same episode, Midge is jokingly mistaken for Susie’s girlfriend at the comedy club. Many people want more exploration of that character’s sexuality. Is that something we’ll see?Stay tuned in. I think for the first few years, we really focused on Susie and her ambitions. We let the character dictate what the audience should know, which is practically nothing, but obviously the people around her are going to be curious. We definitely are not going to ignore that.
