And as temperatures rise, ambulance staff say emergency calls are at ‘New Year’s Eve’ levels on a daily basis.
One paramedic said they arrived at work this week to face 153 patients waiting for an ambulance. They said the numbers of 999 callers are at ‘New Year’s Eve’ levels on a daily basis. In 2020/21, there were 1,174 occasions where temperatures in wards or other clinical areas rose above 26C - the highest number in at least five years according to NHS Digital.
