9 out of the 10 vehicles motorists own for the longest periods are sleek sports cars and large sport-utility vehicles
Share to twitterThe Porsche 911 is one of those rare cars owners hate to trade in, and why would they?American motorists have long had torrid love affairs with their vehicles. They name them, pamper them, and keep them running fastidiously, at least until they’re unceremoniously dumped for a flashy new ride. But drivers tend to hold onto some models more tenaciously than others.
Why do owners tend to keep sports cars and large truck-based SUVs for extra-extended periods? “Sports cars typically aren’t daily drivers and don’t accrue high mileage as a result, so it takes them longer to show signs of wear and tear,” explains iSeeCars CEO Phong Ly. Of the 10 SUVs having the longest ownership periods, all but two are big and burly truck-based models.
On the other hand, the pickup trucks owners keep for the most-extended terms are not the obvious choices. The longevity leaders here are the Nissan Frontier , Toyota Tacoma , Nissan Titan , and the Toyota Tundra . The four domestic-brand full-size models are at or just below the segment average of 8.7 years, with the sales leading Ford F-150 just off the mark at 8.5 years. Still, that’s above the average for all vehicles.
