With her husband and father's armies leagues to the south, Stiorra mounts a desperate defense against their attackers, but she is killed by Skoll and his son before Uhtred and Sigtryggr can reach her. This is a desperately sad moment for Uhtred, who loses a multitude of loved ones throughout the series. Uhtred experiences a horrible amount of grief from all the deaths he lives through, but few are felt so keenly as the death of Stiorra.
