Hearings will start on Tuesday for only the third impeachment trial in U.S. history.
: After months of political wrangling, bruising witness testimony and cries of a ‘hoax’ over President Donald Trump’s alleged abuse of power, his impeachment trial in the senate will enter full swing on Tuesday—and it’s likely to be anything but dull.
Lawmakers could decide during the course of the trial whether to allow witnesses to testify, but that will depend on the proposed rules set out by Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell, which lawmakers could vote on this Tuesday. Impeachment managers, who will act as prosecutors during the trial and argue for Trump’s removal, will present their case, while Trump’s lawyers will be expected to present their opening arguments after. to the impeachment charges against him, calling them a “brazen and unlawful attempt to overturn the results of the 2016 election and interfere with the 2020 election.”
It is not known how long the trial will last—but it could be on the longer side if witnesses are called. This is only the third impeachment trial in U.S. history. Bill Clinton’s 1999 trial lasted five weeks, while Andrew Johnson’s trial in 1868, which ended in acquittal, lasted around three months.
