“I’m ending it here in Ottawa,” said Merklinger. “Young guys can do this. My son is a talented ice technician. He did the Scotties this past year. If something isn’t being passed on to these younger guys, then they’re not paying attention. It’s time for me to step away. Sixteen days, 16-hour days … it’s a lot. There are no breaks.
“We all know what the freezing temperature of water is,” said Merklinger. “And here we were trying to keep the ice frozen. It’s an awesome memory because it turned out well.” While much of his notoriety has come from his ability to polish ice surfaces, Merlinger was also a curler of note. He was on skip Earle Morris’ team that played at the 1985 Brier.
“The thing about the game of curling is the camaraderie,” he said. “You shake hands before a game, you shake hands after a game and everybody’s warm and genuine. It’s one of those games where you’re going to have doctors and lawyers and sanitary engineers and teachers … you get people from all walks of life. They’re playing together and everybody’s on the same level. There’s no upper echelon, lower echelon or anything like that.
