Every year at this time “handling the holidays” becomes a common theme in my Dementia Caregivers’ support groups.
• Even in the milder stages of dementia, the joys once felt are no longer the same. Some of my families take this with pause. The joys may be smaller, shorter, yet possibly deeper and more conscientious. Enjoy the small moments; • Consider that the sources of joy of the past may not be the same today. Patients with dementia operate on a “today mode.” We are not depriving them of joy if we aren't recreating a past they don't remember..
• Keep it small. Larger groups may cause anxiety as noise levels increase and some faces may not be recognizable.If some traditions are important to you, with proper adjustments, they can still be pleasant and even sensory-stimulating. Some of these may include:• Trimming the tree, holding and enjoying ornaments of various shapes and textures;
