When the trilogy began, fans were eager for more epic fantasy films from Jackson, whose Lord of the Rings series, while equally scrutinized by Tolkien enthusiasts, were still highly entertaining adaptations of the author’s beloved novels.
The Hobbit’s Necromancer Looks The Way The Balrog Should Have The Necromancer, like the Balrog is a Maia, as well as a fire spirit, and has a particularly striking appearance that conveys both power, malevolence, and a sense of supernatural mysticism. Given the Balrog's origins, it should have resembled The Necromancer as a more magical manifestation, something much more akin to a fallen angel than a demonic beast given its history in Middle-earth.
