As pleasing as bubblegum pop and about as memorable, The High Note awkwardly welds together the rom-com and the workplace fantasy with its story of a musician’s personal assistant who really wants to produce.
Grace is played by Tracee Ellis Ross, the multi-hyphenate best known for her role in TV’s Black-ish, and notable in this context for being the daughter of singing legend Diana Ross. Whether through observation, genetics or sheer acting prowess, she perfectly embodies the sometimes incongruous personality traits of the very famous.
Maggie also has a no-nonsense roommate and sounding board, played by Zoe Chao, and a love interest in David Cliff . The two of them meet in a grocery store, quickly bond over a shared love of music – they disagree on just enough to argue flirtatiously – and quickly begin a parallel dance of let-me-produce-you and let-me-kiss-you.
