For the first time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's over ten-year history, Marvel Studios has assembled a Christmas holiday special in the form of The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. From writer-director James Gunn, who's been the central creative figure on the first two Guardians of the Galaxy movies and is currently in post-production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the holiday special sees Marvel's galactic heroes in a different format than ever before.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY The holiday special picks up after Avengers: Endgame and Thor: Love & Thunder, with the Guardians of the Galaxy setting up a home base on Knowhere. When Kraglin tells his fellow Guardians about how Yondu ruined Christmas for Peter Quill when he was a kid, Mantis endeavors to give Peter a happier holiday memory. Along with Drax , Mantis travels to Earth to find Peter's human hero Kevin Bacon .
Perhaps the holiday special's weakest aspect is that, because much of the 44-minute runtime is spent with Drax and Mantis on Earth, it's lacking the full group dynamic that works so well in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. With the additions of Kraglin, Nebula and Cosmo, and the lack of Gamora, this is a much different Guardians of the Galaxy lineup than in previous MCU movies, and the holiday special never really establishes what they're like all together.
The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special isn't quite like a typical movie entry of the franchise, but it's not meant to be, either. It's an entirely different format and Gunn does an excellent job in adapting them to the holiday TV special for an adventure that feels fresh even if the characters are the same.
Ultimately, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is a delightfully festive and sweetly heartwarming entry in the MCU that Marvel fans will surely want to check out. It's not necessarily a must-watch, though it does work as a bridge between Thor: Love & Thunder and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
