If you missed out on whale watching this summer, here's some highlights that includes a weird looking fish.
The humpback whale Amy Tudor calls ‘Shooting Star’ put on quite the breach shows during the 2022 whale watching season. It was one of what she calls her 'Great Eight' moments of 2022. AMY TUDOR PHOTOBRIER ISLAND, NS – This year’s whale watching season in the Bay of Fundy was another one filled with anticipation, excitement and plenty of photo and video opportunities.
• Thresher Sharks are very impressive hunters that tend to prey on schools of fish. They use their unique tails to help trick and lure prey. Once the prey comes close to them, they will then slap the prey with their tail repeatedly until it is disabled. When we spotted him, he had hundreds of Atlantic white-sided dolphins around him. We are unsure if the dolphins are paying homage and praise to Thom, as orcas are really the king of the dolphins, or if the hundreds of dolphins are swarming Thom as a defence mechanism to avoid being dinner for the orca. Either way, it is an honour to be able to witness it.
I sent the photos to Moira Brown, senior scientist at Canadian Whale Institute and she was able to provide an ID. I had the pleasure of photographing Catalog #3890,"Babushka." She is an adult female born in 2018.There are many whales in the Bay of Fundy, but there are a few whales that were standouts this year. One of those whales who wowed the crowds was Tusk.No other whale has been seen moving their tail with a rubber-like movement.
We went from seeing two to three a week in previous years, to seeing two or three a tour during the peak summer. The population boom was not only in the Bay of Fundy there were reports all along the Gulf of Maine. An open-mouthed humpback whale surface feeds during an Sept. 10 whale watching tour, with its baleen and palate showing. AMY TUDOR PHOTOIf there was an award for breaching, slapping and showing off, the prize would go to the 2022 calf of Photon that I call ‘Shooting Star.’We encountered this calf nearly 10 times over the summer and often the little one would put on a big show.
