made the ultimate sacrifice when they joined Freedom Summer based on their faith in American Democracy. It’s no coincidence that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 were finally passed as Americans bore witness to the violence that underpinned the Jim Crow era, broadcast into the nation’s living rooms.
Although hard to imagine today, not too long ago elected representatives from across the political spectrum came together nearly unanimously and at unprecedented speed to ratify a new amendment. In doing so, they recognized the indispensable role that young people play in protecting democracy.
It was not a policy supported only by city residents or the college-educated. As Patricia Keefer, a core youth organizer for the 26th Amendment has explained, Appalachians and farmers across the nation understood too well that their youth were being and that they too were invested in America’s future and deserved the ballot. The youth vote was not about partisanship, it was about protecting democracy.during the ceremonial certification that the young offer “some idealism, some courage, some stamina, some high moral purpose that this nation always needs because a country throughout history we find, goes through ebbs and flows of idealism.
