The Golden Globes will be serving an entirely plant-based menu at its awards ceremony via nparts

The Golden Globes is putting star power behind the plant-based movement by going meatless with its menu this year. In an effort to raise awareness about the environmental impact of food choices, AP reports, more than 1,300 guests will dine on an entirely plant-based menu at The Beverly Hilton hotel prior to the live telecast on Sunday.

“Over the holidays, we took time to reflect on the last year and began thinking about the new year and the decade ahead,” Lorenzo Soria, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association , told the Los Angeles Times. “The climate crisis is impossible to ignore and after speaking with our peers, and friends in the community, we felt challenged to do better.

While the menu for the annual bash has been gluten-free for several years, this is the first time the Golden Globes has served a wholly vegan offering. Instead of Chilean sea bass, the entrée of choice for the past several years, the main course will be king oyster mushroom “scallops” with wild mushroom risotto, carrots and roasted baby brussels sprouts, which will be preceded by a chilled golden beet soup and followed by a vegan opera dome.

Since HFPA’s decision to change the menu came at the eleventh hour — just a couple of weeks before the show — Matthew Morgan, executive chef at The Beverly Hilton, was charged with creating a new menu in a tight timeframe. “It was a little shocking when first mentioned, because of being very close to the actual Globes and having already decided on a menu,” he told AP. “But once we thought about it and the message that it sent, we were really excited about it.

With a team of 11 chefs and 120 culinary staff, Morgan will prepare roughly 10,000 meals during “the party of the year.” The meatless mandate extends past the dinner table and ceremony: Plant-based options will be piled on the stars’ off-camera buffets and served until the last after-parties wind down. As part of its “larger sustainability push,” HFPA will also limit the use of plastic at the event. Water will be served in glass bottles and all straws made from paper.
