Considering Aaron Judge's desire to stay in pinstripes for life, he played the Giants and Yankees off each other brilliantly.
for leverage and was going to sign with the Yankees all along, the big man all but confirmed as much in an interview published Wednesday.Judge told Bob Klapisch of NJ.com
. “I knew in my heart that I wanted to re-sign with the Yankees, but I decided to listen to the other teams. At least go through with the process.” It was a very lucrative process for Judge, who ultimately used the Giants to bid the Yankees up to a nine-year, $360 million contract. In the interview, Judge put to rest the notion — often speculated on by Giants fans — that San Francisco could have signed Judge by blowing that number out of the water. After all, the Padres were prepared to offer way more.
“That was enough for me,” Judge said of the $360 million. “If all I was doing was chasing money, I could’ve gone to another team who had a higher offer,” he said, alluding to the Padres, who were rumored to have floated a $400 million deal to Judge."But New York is where I wanted to finish my career.”He showed impressive steel in negotiating with the Yankees, considering he never really wanted to leave the Bronx.
