A viral TikTok put Maddie Machado at the forefront of recent conversations about tech layoffs: 'I think [companies like Meta, Amazon and Google are] being very intentional about the layoffs, and I wish they would have been as intentional about the hiring.'
Machado said she knows some people saw her videos as a “success story” — of a worker doing little to no labor and getting paid handsomely by a large corporation for it. She also knows that they've been used as proof that these recent tech layoffs were justified, even though she left Meta more than a year ago and fully exited Big Tech in mid-2022.faces, she said. Thewere a reminder that anyone could be affected, regardless of how much or how little they worked, Machado explained.
"You could be the hardest-working person, getting it by your bootstraps, and still be let go after 10, 15, 20 years of work with no explanation, or you could be a really mediocre worker who gets let go, and you still get the same level of severance as that person who gave it their all," Machado said."I don’t want my story to be, 'Oh my gosh, she’s ruining it for other people who are trying to stay under the radar.
"I don't want people to use this story to justify what is really poor management at companies like Meta and Amazon and Google to hire so many people without the intention of them doing any work," she added."... I think they're being very intentional about the layoffs, and I wish they would have been as intentional about the hiring."
