Double decker buses hold around 80 people - and take up much less room than 16 cars
Yes, traffic chaos is particularly bad in Belfast right now because of roads works across the city to connect Grand Central Station and upgrade the likes of the Sydenham bypass. But congestion in Belfast has been horrendous for years - with no signs of it waning as so many simply refuse to stop using their cars for every single journey.
I'm not saying Belfast's public transport system is perfect, it is "not fit for purpose" as Chris Suitor from Suitor & Co said. But it's a hell of a lot better than in most of the rest of Northern Ireland. In ROI, public transport fares were cut by 20% in recent years and they have stayed that way. Children under nine now go free on all public transport to encourage more parents to use it with their weeuns, while they spend €1 million a day on improving their active travel offering through reallocating road space for bike and bus lanes.
But above all else, I can't understand how anyone could put the brass neck on them, as they sit behind the wheel of a car, to whinge when the number of cars on the road are the main source of our congestion problems. Why couldn't Stephen Nolan take his bike to work? He might even like it - and it's really good for your health. Wee tip on the sore bum - get a gel seat like I did - they're very comfy.
But with their numbers plummeting 82% because of changes in farming practices, including a move from hay to silage, the RSPB NI decided to step up and try to help farmers to preserve the few left.
