How the debate about working moms is changing:

Lara Bazelon, a divorced mom of young children, a lawyer, a law professor and a writer published an op-ed in thethis week about how prioritizing her work caused her to miss some of her young children’s birthdays, school events and quality time at home with the kids. Over 1,300 readers posted comments to the article revealing that the debate about working moms still rages on, but their remarks show how the discussion has changed from decades past.
In her op-ed last week, Bazelon described how much she loves her children, and how she would feel empty without her job. She describes times when she had to make difficult choiceschoices between children’s birthday parties and clients’ needs. Sometimes she chose the clients, because she says, they “needed me more than my children did.” Even when she was home, she describes that often she was not fully present, often on the phone dealing with a work issue.
Still, the majority of the comments I read disapproved of Bazelon's choices. The most intriguing of these emphasized the role of career choice in prioritizing work over family. In general, it seems people don’t want their firefighters or surgeons ditching their work and running off to their kid’s soccer practice. It’s fine to put out the literal fire while your kids are with a babysitter, but several questioned whether Bazelon’s legal fires met this same threshold of importance.
The good news that can be garnered from this dialogue is that we’re no longer questioning whether or not mothers should be employed or stay at home with their children all day. We've accepted the working mom and moved on from that discussion.
