A Pew Research Forum study shows millennials are leaving religion in large numbers. But what about the others doing the complete opposite?
Cara Joy was 20 years old when she first opened an English translation of the Quran in 2014. Her heart revelled with what she found inside.
Dr. Joel Thiessen, a sociologist at Ambrose University in Calgary says that while it’s rare, there are cases of millennials like Joy going against the trend and becoming religious, whether it’s rediscovering their roots or joining a new faith altogether. “I remember every time I’d hear the word God, I’d get an uncomfortable feeling,” she said. “It was something I had so dismissed throughout my entire life that I would just feel awkward at the sound of it.”
“When people join religious groups, they join because of the community they have with others, even before they even understand or embrace the particular beliefs or behaviours of that group,” Thiessen said. “By the end of my first year at university I thought: ‘I think they were on to something,’” Dmitrenko said. “I think it’s weird that I started to miss the ritual of going to church. It becomes so ingrained in your life and then you graduate and never go.”
While Dmitrenko said she believes in all of Catholicism’s moral teachings including being pro-life, she doesn’t consider herself to be a “blind follower” and doesn’t think the government has a right “to play God.”
