After she arrives in Fort McMurray, she finds a job as a tool crib attendant at a base mine. Her job is to sign out wrenches and adaptors to the workers in the field. During her time in Alberta, she moves between oil companies looking for higher pay. She finds the highest pay at a remote camp where workers, most of them men, endure more isolation and longer hours.
Beaton contrasts the darker side of life in the isolated workplaces with the small acts of kindness she experienced. During the holidays, she receives a surprise, homemade Christmas gift from a male co-worker. During her time in the oil sands, Beaton kept mostly to herself. She spent a lot of time alone and began creating webcomics. Hark! A Vagrant was born. She drew a huge following around the world and when a collection of the comic strip came out, it landed on the New York Times graphic novel bestseller list.
